The Chinese have been drinking green tea for over 5000 years. They have always known what we were a bit slow to discover; green tea is unbelievably good for us. Now people drink green tea for all kinds of reasons because it’s a great natural remedy for many things but let’s explore 5 of the health benefits of drinking green tea.
1. Antioxidants and Vitamins
Green tea contains polyphenols; types of antioxidants that help fight off free radicals that can destroy cells, DNA and proteins in our bodies. We can never rid our bodies of all free radicals, but drinking green tea on a daily basis can help immensely. Green tea also contains vitamin B complex and vitamin E, and there is more vitamin C in a cup of green tea than there is in an orange!
2. Cancer Prevention
You may have heard that green tea is used in conjunction with modern medicine to combat cancer. There are no specific studies that show green tea cures cancer, but what may be helpful is drinking green tea to prevent cancer. Because of the high antioxiant activity in green tea, it can help fight changing cells. Many health professionals are now recommending that green tea is an effective weapon to add to any anti-cancer regimen.
3. Drink Your Cholesterol Away
One of the benefits of drinking green tea is it can help lower cholesterol. Health studies have shown that the Japanese have lower serum cholesterol levels than many Westerners do. They have attributed these statistics to diet and consumption of green tea.

4. When Diarrhea Strikes
We all get it once in a while, some of us more often than others. Regardless, diarrhea is no fun. You can help relieve your diarrhea attack by drinking green tea. Green tea contains tannins that help form a protective coating on your bowel, this in turn helps prevent the toxins that are causing the diarrhea to strike. Steep the tea for 15 to 20 minutes to extract all the tannins. Drink 5-6 cups a day until your diarrhea is gone.
5. Bumpy Hives
20 percent of the population will have at least one outbreak of hives in their lifetime. If you are one of the unfortunate people who suffers from frequent outbreaks of hives, then green tea may be helpful to you. Green tea contains a powerful antioxidant called catechins that stabilises your cell membranes and helps prevent the breakout of hives. Steep the tea for 10 minutes and drink.
The benefits of drinking green tea are countless, it helps with so much more than has been mentioned here. It’s really a great all round tea to drink and makes a great alternative to regular tea or coffee.
