One of the biggest issues for everyone is SUGAR!

  • We are addicted
  • We get cravings in the afternoon or evening
  • We have to compete with our partner to keep up with their sugar intake
  • We NEED our daily fix of biscuits with our cup of tea

Whatever it is, sugar is a BIG problem for most of us. Because of this reason we don’t really want to give it up but we also want to lose some weight. So…we’re faced with a conundrum. The lingering questions still remain:

  • Will I lose weight with a sugar free diet?
  • Do I really need to cut all the sugar out?
  • How beneficial will it really be?

That’s exactly what we’ll seek to answer right here right now, and if you’re looking for more tips like this to help you all the time, Click here to subscribe to my weekly nutrition newsletter. I always share loads of tips and tricks.

Now let’s dig in.

Will I lose weight with a sugar free diet?

The short answer is YES.

But I’m sure you want to know why. The reason why is that sugar promotes fat storage. This occurs because eating sugar and carbohydrates influences key hormones in the body. The basics are that when we eat sugar our blood sugar rises and then our body releases insulin. Having a high blood sugar is not good for our health and so the job of insulin is to help bring the blood sugar back down to a normal range. Insulin will encourage the body to store fat because it is the energy storage hormone and the body just can’t cope with excess sugar.

On top of that, table sugar is part glucose, part fructose. Fructose gets metabolised entirely by the liver. Not only does that present the liver with more work but fructose converts to fat at a much higher rate to glucose, while the glucose makes fructose metoblism much faster.

With a sugar free diet, you are keeping your blood sugar in a normal range without those high blood sugar and insulin peaks. That means less fat storage.

You also avoid the fructose load and that means less fat conversion in the first place.

Following a sugar free diet is one of the MOST effective ways to lose weight, period!

Do I really need to cut all the sugar out?

Well that’s up to you but it will be better if you do. And that goes for natural sugars like honey, maple syrup, and molasses too. Even consuming too much fruit can hold you back. Cut out as much additional sugar in all it’s forms and keep fruit to 2 pieces a day.

How beneficial will it really be?

EXTREMELY beneficial on every level! You WILL lose weight but not only that, you will regain energy, you will balance hormones, you will sleep better and much more. It is one of the best things you can do for your body. Perhaps not the easiest thing but well worth the effort.

TAKE NOTE

Give it time. Nothing happens overnight so you won’t see miracles in a week or two. You have to give it time but when you do, the longer you can stick to a sugar free plan, the better results you will see as time goes on :)

Ive just started my sugar free plan last week and already have had decent results! Cant believe i had so much fructose in my diet without being aware of it and thats not even added sugar (like too much fruit in my yoghurt etc)
Im only 4kg overweight but my body fat is high from previous yo yo diets particularly low cal. In a week since my changes my weight is down 1kg and my body fat down 1%. extremely happy and feeling good. Many thanks to my naturopath and also to you jedha for the insightful factual info

Yes, we can have A LOT of sugar and fructose in our diet that we are unaware of, that’s for sure. Glad you’re feeling better for it, most people do. Congrats on your success and I’m sure you’ll see the other 3 kgs coming off too :)

    Hello Jedha

I also started a sugar free diet 4 days ago so far good no sugar in my diet. I am hoping to shed 15kg. Currently sitting on 80kg.

Is eating some bread n pasta ok ? My idea of cutting out sugar is sweet biscuits ice cream cakes pastries lollies chocolate juice n soft drink. Most cereals too are out. Is there anything else I need stay away from ?

Hi Seb, I think you’ll be doing your body a big favor by cutting out those initial items and if you’ve been eating things like biscuits, cakes, etc. regularly then you should notice the weight starting to drop off. The key is consistency – sticking to one thing for more than a week and keeping focused.

Some bread and pasta is ok, but you will get better and faster results if you avoid them.
