7 Tips To Breaking A Weight Loss Plateau

A key frustration for many of us is hitting a weight loss plateau. At some time or another it happens to all of us. They can be really discouraging when they stick around and you’re stuck making no headway at all, right?

Very frustrating!

Well there are a few things we can do to break the pattern and although there isn’t a one size fits all model. The key is to experiment, give it 3 weeks and see if the weight starts shifting again. You can also try to combine a few of the strategies together to get past the plateau.

1. Monitor your food intake
Keep a food diary of all the things you eat and drink over a week and then take a good hard look at where you might be slipping up. Sometimes we think we’re eating well when in fact we may be including a few too many indulgences.

2. Practice moderate portion control
I’ve always found that practicing moderate portion control can be very helpful in seeing better results occur faster. Just try reducing portions overall throughout the day, keep it up for a while and see what happens. We often don’t need as much as we may think.

3. Increase good fats
Good healthy omega 3 fats actually help us to burn fat by allowing the body to release it. Sounds strange but fat does not make us fat, carbs and sugar do. So sometimes all we need is a bit more fat in the diet. Try including more avocado, olive oil, or flaxseed oil.

4. Analyze your exercise routine
Exercising like a mad person day in and day out may seem like a great idea but often it can be too much. Over exercising can elevate cortisol levels and that in turn can elevate insulin. This is not good for weight loss so if you’re doing loads of exercise, try backing off for a while.

On the other side of the table, if you’ve been a bit lazy of late, then it’s time to step it up a notch. Exercise can definitely add that extra 10-20% that may help you get off the plateau.

5. Clean up the diet
Nutrition is the key when it comes to weight loss, it’s responsible for 80-90% of all of our results. So the best thing you can possibly do is clean up your diet so it’s squeaky clean. Cut out any extras, additions, indulgences and see how much it changes results!

6. Drink more water
Water helps shift things in the body, flushes out toxins, and hydrates the body so all our cells function at their best. Drink at least 1.5 litres of water a day and you will definitely notice a difference.

7. Sleep, rest, relax
Sleep, rest and relaxtion can help you lose weight. Stress, over exercising, worrying about weight loss, and never stopping to take a breath can all negatively impact results. It’s important to get adequate sleep, take some time out, and do things that are relaxing.

So try one or more of those strategies and you should see yourself getting off that weight loss plateau in a hurry :)
