Herbal Coffee Substitute

Recently I wrote about a method for changing our habits, Swap it don’t Stop it!

Well, when it comes to coffee, it’s one of those things that you probably enjoy. Me too!

But I go through phases. Sometimes I like to drink coffee, and other times I like to be caffeine free and give my adrenals and body a break.

Herbal Coffee Substitute

Herbal Coffee Substitutes

So my favorite herbal coffee substitute for many years now is roasted dandelion root tea, sometimes called roasted dandelion root coffee.

I think it has a flavor similar to coffee in many ways and the great part about it is you can add milk and it resembles coffee too, great way to trick the brain into thinking you’re still drinking your daily pleasure :)

I like to drink my dandelion root in a few different ways, so I’ve got 4 different things for you to try.

1. Black
I most often like to drink it black, I’m like that with coffee too. It also happens to be the best way to drink it for the medicinal purposes dandelion provides to the liver. It’s a GREAT liver cleansing herb so helps boost weight loss, helps you recover from a hangover fast, helps aid digestion and metabolism, and much more.

2. Dandelion Latte

Place 1/2 cup water and 1/2 cup milk in a pan on the stove over a low-medium heat. Slowly bring it to a simmer, then add some sweetener and pour it into a glass.

This latte will taste great with cows milk, soy milk, almond milk, or coconut milk.

3. Chai Dandelion

Chai is a wonderful aromatic Indian style tea. I’ve always loved it as a great winter warming drink and when my kids were younger we’d make a big pot of dandy chai and drink it all the time.

Dandy Chai Recipe

This is a mild flavored chai recipe. If you do like it spicer, you can simply add more spices.

  • 4 bags roasted dandelion root tea
  • 1 cinnamon stick – broken into pieces
  • 5 cloves – chopped
  • 3 cardomon pods – chopped
  • 1 inch piece of fresh ginger (optional)
  • 6 cups water

Place all the ingedients in a pot on the stove, bring to the boil, then turn down the heat and simmer for 5 minutes. Serve in cups with milk of your choice and a little honey or sweetener.

You can reuse the mixture over a few days and just top it up by adding some extra ingredients if needed.

4. Creamy Coconut Dandy Latte or Chai

If you want some sweetness with a thicker, creamier and sweet taste, use coconut milk or coconut cream instead of standard milk. Since I don’t use things like honey or sugar much, I make a dandy latte or chai like this sometimes and it provides some great natural sweetness.

So give dandelion root a try as an herbal coffee substitute, it really is great.

Take care,

Jedha :)
