Is Green Tea Anti-Inflammatory?

I did some research this week looking at some of the latest research on green tea and inflammation.

And here’s what came out of it.

The short answer: YES, green tea is anti-inflammatory.

But if you’re anything like me you’d like to know a bit more, right?

Don’t worry I wasn’t going to leave you hanging with the short answer :)

I’d love to share what I found because I was actually surprised to learn about some of the amazing anti-inflammatory benefits of green tea myself.

Let’s start with the nutrient profile of green tea.

Nutrient Profile Of Green Tea

Did you know that green tea and black tea are from the same plant?

To tell you the truth, neither did I, but they both come from the ‘Camellia sinensis’ plant. Green tea is unfermented and simply dried, while the black tea is the fermented and treated version of the plant.

This profoundly effects the nutrient profile of the two, most importantly the phenolic compounds in the plant, because these are where we get the benefits.

The phenolics in black tea are only 5%, while in green tea they are 30-40%, so that’s a big difference.

Green Tea Nutrients

Green Tea Catechins

  • 15% protein
  • 4% amino acids
  • 26% fibre
  • 7% carbs
  • 7% lipids
  • 5% minerals
  • 30-40% phenolic/flavonoid compounds
  • 2-6% caffeine
  • 6.4% epicatechin
  • 13.6% epicatechin3-gallate
  • 19% epigallcathechin
  • 59% epigallocathechin-3-gallate

 

These catechins have been studied for their amazing antioxidant power and have been shown to be:

  • anti-mutigenic
  • anti-cancer
  • anti-diabetic
  • anti-inflammatory
  • anti-bacterial
  • anti-viral

As you can see from the catechins, there is 59% epigallocathechin-3-gallate, and this is the one that has been shown to have some amazing benefits in reducing inflammation, reducing heart conditions, reducing weight gain, helping type 2 diabetes, aiding cancer, and helping arthritis.

The Anti-Inflammatory Effects Of Green Tea

Is Green Tea Anti-Inflammatory?

When we get inflammation, our body produces inflammatory cytokines, these are proteins that upregulate the immune response causing more inflammation.

You probably aren’t interested too much in the technical stuff but in case you are some of these inflammatory cytokines include interleukin-6, C reactive protein, and tumor neucrosis factor-a.

Another thing green tea does is scavenge reactive oxygen species (aka free radicals) and stops pro-oxidant enzymes. What that means is it stops more production of free radicals and this helps slow down the inflammatory process as well.

In all conditions, it’s anti-inflammatory effects are what appears to help the most. BUT it also shows many other great benefits and here are just a few I’d like to share.

Green Tea For Arthritis

Studies are beginning to show some potentially great benefits of green tea for osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis.

Here is what the studies suggest:

  • It reduces those inflammatory cytokines we just talked about
  • Alters the redox status in joints
  • Helps regulate cartilage balance
  • Helps regulate synovial activity
  • Inhibits NF-kB activity – the control switch for regulating genes in the cellular response, inflammation, immunity and arthritis
  • Reduces osteoclast formation

All and all that means that green tea has some great benefits for people with arthritis.

Green Tea For Heart Disease

Reactive oxygen species (free radicals) are a major cause of inflammation in heart conditions, and we already established that green tea helps scavenge those so that’s one great benefit.

Surprisingly green tea also decreases absorption of triglycerides and cholesterol and enhances fat excretion. It also has the added benefit of decreasing the oxidation rate of LDL cholesterol. This is great because oxidised LDL has been shown to be the major contributor to blocked arteries that lead to heart attack and stroke.

Green tea also reduces the adhesion of immune cells to the endothelium (the artery wall). And on top of this green tea produces nitric oxide. This improves vascular function by having a relaxing effect on the arteries. When we don’t have enough nitric oxide we get a constricting effect in our arteries.

And the last thing is it is anti-prolific, meaning it helps stop cells from multiplying so this prevents those lesions that build up in the arteries.

Green Tea For Weight

Some studies have shown that consumption of green tea reduces weight gain, reduces blood glucose, insulin levels, and glucose tolerance.

Green Tea For Neurodegenerative Conditions and Mental Health

  • Lowers the risk of depressive symptoms
  • Reduces psychological distress
  • Possibly helps reduce risk of Parkinson’s disease
  • May be helpful in the treatment of anxiety, stress, and insomnia

So it seems that green tea has multiple beneficial effects across a large variety of conditions, mostly through it’s anti-inflammatory capacity but also through a variety of other mechanisms as well.

How Much Green Tea Per Day?

Well the studies suggest:

  • Consuming more than or equal to 3 cups has a 21% decreased risk of stroke
  • Daily consumption of 4 or more cups of green tea decreases body weight or body fat
  • 5 cups a day produces a 26% decreased cardiovascular deaths
  • 1 cup a day reduces coronary artery disease by 10%

So it seems that drinking even 1 cup of green tea a day can provide benefits and drinking a few cups a day is even better.

    Hi Jedha, what i like to know if all green tea has anti-inflamatory workings, also tea which is only partly green tea. I have adrenal fatique and i also suffer from to much anti-inflammatory reactions in my body. It makes me feel anxious. Could you take a look at the green tea product i use, or can you just give me an answer?

      Yes, all types of green teas will provide benefits. If they are combined with other herbal teas then you will get additional benefits from the other herbs also :)

    Hi Jedha

    I’m actually allergic to tea. And a whole bunch of other stuff! But I’m thinking that since it has all those anti-inflammatory effects, will it be healthy for me or should I leave it alone? What it mainly does is give me a bit of rash but not so much that it looks weird or anything, it’s just annoying.

    I’ve started to follow your advice and reading your research and articles about anti-inflammatory foods. Unfortunately for me many of them I’m allergic to 😉

      Hi Louise, That must make it difficult for you.

      I’m not sure if you also have other conditions beyond your allergies but in your situation I would probably be inclined to recommend sticking to foods that you don’t get an allergic reaction to. Unfortunately the allergy response is an inflammatory one rather than an anti-inflammatory one. So although the benefits of green tea are great for most people, they may not be for you.

      Have you tried to solve your allergy problems? I’m wondering if you have digestive issues that need resolving to help eliminate some of these.

    Recently had a blood clot in my left antecubitel(where the arm bends at the elbow) Was put on warfarin (blood thinner). Was told not to drink green tea because it would mess with clotting factor in my blood. But yet, a blood clot is the result of inflammation in the body. What are your thoughts?
