Cooking beet greens is not something that is very common. They are something that often gets thrown in the bin or compost. But they can be eaten and they are a tasty green and they are also free.
That might sound strange but it’s true. I bought some beets just 2 days ago for just $2.79 and their leafy greens came included for free! That’s 4 fresh beets plus a whole bunch of fresh greens for less than $3. Now that’s a bargain!

Surprisingly beet greens are really tasty! My husband is not really a big fan of greens, yours might be the same. Sure he does eat them but not in great quantities. BUT he actually served himself two extra serves when I made these simple sauteed beet greens!
Yes I was surprised that he liked them so much! So if you have people in the house who don’t like greens too much then perhaps they might like these as well

Sauteed Beet Greens Recipe
- 1 bunch beet greens – cut the stalks about 2cms below the leaves
- 2 small onions or 1 large one – diced
- 1 tablespoon dry sherry
- 1 tablespoon tamari (wheat free soy sauce)
- Oil for cooking
- Heat oil in a wok or large fry pan
- Add onions and saute until brown for about 3 minutes
- Add your beet greens and saute for 3-5 minutes
- Add the sherry and tamari
- Cook for a further 2 minutes or to your desired texture – I like them a little crispy but you may like them cooked better
- Serve as a side dish to your favourite meal
I hope you’ll enjoy it as much as we did
