It’s a good question isn’t it? Sugar is highly addictive, we love the taste and the pleasure of eating it BUT is it bad for us? And is it always bad?
One thing I know is that most people struggle with sugar and carb cravings and cave into the temptations of sugar. It’s not surprising because as human beings we do have an innate liking for sugar, it’s just a natural taste preference we have. However sugar was not always so easily available to us. In our modern food supply we have access to it 24/7 and that often leads us to eat it 24/7. At the end of the day this is not such a great thing.

In this podcast, you mentioned limiting intake to something like 25 grams of sugar a day. My question is if the sugar intake you’re discussing includes the sugars in fruit and veggies. Also, do you consider stevia to be a safe, healthy alternative natural sweetener to sugar? I have a sweet tooth
what can I say. I’ve tried to switch over to raw honey and pure maple syrup for most things but sometimes I need more sweetness.
Thank you for doing these podcasts and sharing the scientific research. I really appreciate that you care enough to put the effort in to help people. I did a small presentation on oxidative stress in a neuroendocrinology course about a year ago and this podcast really reminded me of a lot of the information I learned in the process. (Especially when you reference metabolic syndrome)
Hi Kathleen, thanks for your question and I will be sure to elaborate on this in a future podcast. I was referring to ‘added’ sugars in the diet, so the World Health Organization recommends 25 grams per day limit, which is about 6 teaspoons. I personally still think that’s quite a lot of ‘added’ sugar every day. It does not include the natural carbohydrates in fruits and veggies.
Yes I think stevia is safe and use it myself. I did a short podcast about it recently http://goodfoodeating.org/6650/is-stevia-safe/
Thanks for listening, so glad you get value out of them. Be sure to stop by and check in again soon. All the best
