Back to basics

The paleo diet breaks many of the long held beliefs about nutrition, diet and weight loss, and truth be told it does have many benefits as a nutritional plan. Essentially the paleo diet takes us right back to eating the types of foods we were really designed to eat all along. Much of the plan I follow could be called paleo in nature. I like to eat real food just the way nature intended it but the paleo diet does take things one step further by eliminating many things out of the diet, you’ll find the food lists below.

I think the paleo diet plan has high merits in many situations, and I do work with lots of clients who follow a paleo diet. I also frequently recommend it as a great plan to follow for many people. I followed a strict paleo diet myself for a couple of years and while I do include some other things these days, I think it’s a great way to get back to basics so you can learn to know what your body needs.

That’s really a simple sum up, the paleo diet helps you get back to the basics of real food and real nutrition, which is what your body needs.

In order to understand the paleo diet a bit more, let’s look at the food lists before exploring why you might want to follow a paleo diet yourself.

The Paleo Diet Food Allowed

Lean Meats

Such as lean beef, lamb and pork cuts

Poultry

Such as chicken, turkey and duck

Game Meats

Such as venison, kangaroo, dear and bison

Fish and Seafood

Such as tuna, salmon, trout, cod, crab, lobster, prawns

Organ Meats

Such as livers, hearts, brains and kidneys (I still can’t eat these but some people like them)

Vegetables

All the assortment of vegetables that you can select from the huge amount of options available!

Fruit

Choose from any fruits you like. But if you a trying to lose weight don’t overdo the fruit, stick to 1 or 2 pieces a day.

Eggs

An essential paleo food item

Bacon

Yes you can eat bacon but not too much becuase it is a processed meat

Good Fats

Such as olive oil, coconut oil, flaxseed oil and avocadoes

Nuts & Seeds

Such as coconut, walnuts, hazelnuts, sunflower seeds, and pumpkin seeds

Fresh or Dried Herbs and Spices

Such as basil, oregano, coriander, pepper, and ginger

Dried Fruits

In small amounts

Honey

An optional paleo food, and only in small amounts, especially if you ae trying to lose weight.

Paleo Diet Foods to Avoid

Cut out the dairy products.

Milk, butter, cheese, cream, yoghurt, and ice cream. Some paleo people still eat dairy products in moderation, a bit of cheese, some raw milk on the odd occasion. But for the most part dairy products are not part of a paleo diet.

Excess Salt.

I think once you cut out all the processed foods that ALL contain added salt, you will not have a problem with excess salt. Most packaged commercial products contain iodised table salt that is bad for our health. On the other hand adding a little rock sea salt or celtic salt to cooking will not be harmful.

Potatoes and all potato products

Sweet potatoes, yams and root tubers are okay, but steer well clear of starchy potatoes.

Cut out ALL processed foods.

These are your worst enemy. Boxed, tinned and packet goods found abundantly at your local store. It’s mostly just unedible crap. They often contain a mix of sugar, some form of starch from wheat, potatoes, corn or rice, fat or oil, dairy products, salt, flavourings, and preservatives.

Cut out all the grains.

Barley, corn, millet, oats, rice, rye, wheat and any other grain product. This includes the grain like seeds such as amaranth, buckwheat, and quinoa.

Cut out all the beans and legumes.

All types of beans, back eyed peas, chickpeas, lentils, peas, peanut butter, soybeans and all soy products.

Cut out most commercially bought sauces and condiments

Ketchup, mayonnaise, salad dressing, mustards, pickles etc.

Avoid processed meats

Deli meats, bought sandwich meat loaves, tinned meat loaves, frankfurters, hot dogs, salami, etc.

Avoid the sugary sweet things.

This should be obvouis considering what I’ve already listed above but in case you were wondering. Yes there goes the cakes, candy, lollies, soft drinks, chips, muffins, cookies, fruit juices and drinks, honey, sugars. candy

Say goodbye to fatty deep fired foods and most oils.

Yep that’s right. Goodbye to chips, visits to McDonalds, no spring rolls, or greasy dim sims. And most oils such as canola, sunflower, safflower, and grape seed are a no no!

Does the list above have you worried? Are you feeling daunted by the thought of not eating all that yummy, greasy, satisfying junk food?

I think everyone experiences the same thing and it does take a while to get used to any new diet plan.

Why Does Paleo Cut Out All That Stuff?

Many people who want to try paleo either want to lose weight or have a health issue. Either way in both situations things like digestive health, the immune system, and various other physiological functions are not working as well as they could be. The logic behind the paleo diet is to remove foods that irritate digestive health and promote inflammation, so that the body can get back to functioning just right, does that make sense?

So who can the paleo diet help?

Anyone.

With the paleo diet you can lose weight, you can gain energy back, and you can overcome health issues. Any diet that takes you back to basics will do the same, if there’s no bad stuff going in, then the body will naturally do what it’s meant to.
