In this podcast we cover acute and chronic inflammation in the body, what is it, how does it occur, how is our immune system involved and why it’s important.

It’s a topic of passion of mine that I explored in my thesis so I hope you enjoy exploring it with me in this podcast episode because it is something we all need to be aware of in order to avoid health problems.

There’s a couple of diagrams below that explain the process visually plus a link to an article that basically explores the same information if you’d like to read about it as well.

Acute Inflammation

Involves our innate immune system, and occurs as a natural response to injury, trauma, and stress on our body both internally and externally. You’ve no doubt experienced this type of inflammation yourself, a broken arm, a back injury, a cold and flu or bronchitis, these are all types of acute inflammation. Something triggers our immune response and our body goes to work at dealing with it, then we heal and get better.

Chronic Inflammation

Chronic inflammation, also known as systemic inflammation, is delayed and ongoing inflammation that can occur internally and externally as well. So someone might have a chronic back problem or chronic arthritis and these display themselves physically in a form that we’re most likely aware of. But what many of us don’t realise is that chronic inflammation is a contributor to many lifestyle diseases such as:

  • Cardiovascular disease/heart disease
  • Dementia
  • Osteoporosis
  • Type 2 diabetes
  • Atherosclerosis
  • Alziemers disease
  • Obesity
  • Depression
  • Insulin resistance
  • Rheumatoid arthrits
  • Cancer
  • Thyroid issus
  • Autoimmune dysfunction or disease
  • Digestive issues and dysfunction

Have a listen to the podcast and you’ll begin to see that once we go beyond innate immunity we move to what’s called adaptive immunity, where immune cell recruitment continues and cells can infiltrate, migrate, and proliferate and this is not really such a good thing. It is a fascinating process and diet and nutrition plays a huge part as a stimulus.

Inflammation In The Body

The first diagram is the one I made for my thesis and might not make much sense to you but you can see how the process occurs. The second diagram is the process in an easier format.
