I love answering your questions and the most recent one I’ve received is:

What is the best sugar substitute for weight loss?

steviaGreat question and I’ll keep the answer short and sweet :)

The best sugar substitute for weight loss is definitely stevia.

Here’s why.

Stevia is a natural herb from South America and does not spike insulin. It is also zero calories and does not negatively impact hormones either. For you this means better weight loss results. You can read loads more info about stevia here.

Sugar and Weight Loss

If you want to really zone in and lose weight effectively it’s best to cut out ALL forms of sugar. Refined sugar and processed carbohydrates are the biggest contributors to most people’s sugar intake and these cause weight gain. But too much natural sugar like honey, maple syrup, molasses and fruit can also slow weight loss.

Avoid ‘healthy’ treats

I’ve seen people including ‘healthy’ treats every single day and wondering why they can’t lose weight?! Often they think natural sugars are okay, and they are in moderation. But moderation does not mean every day or twice a day. Moderation means occasionally and this kind of eating pattern won’t help you lose weight.

What about artificial sweeteners?

Studies show artificial sweeteners like aspartame don’t help weight loss but actually increase risk of obesity, weight gain and diabetes.

What else?

For additional benefit you’ll want to stick to gluten free wholegrains such as brown rice, quinoa, millet and amaranth. Avoid all types of refined white grains, flours and so forth. And you want to keep these things in moderation and focus on vegetables as your main source of carbohydrate.

The verdict

As for the best sugar substitute for weight loss, stick with stevia if you need to sweeten something, and if the rest of your diet is good and you retain consistency, you’ll see your results are amplified.

Tips

  • Stevia for sweetener
  • Avoid ALL types of sugar
  • Eat loads of veggies
  • Moderate intake of gluten free wholegrains – that means not every day 3 times a day
  • No artificial sweeteners
  • Avoid ‘healthy’ treats

I hope that helps you get better results.
