Sugar cravings are not something we love to have, especially since most of the time they drive us to eat things like chocolate and sweets. This might be okay sometimes but eating too many sweet things can add a few inches to the waistline if it’s all too often. And there are sooo many benefits to following a sugar free diet when it comes to improving your health.

So I thought I’d share a few supplements to stop sugar cravings that you can use in times of need.

3 great supplements for sugar cravings

Supplements actually work really well to control cravings and some also help maintain blood sugar control as well and this helps to maintain a more regular appetite too. Overall it’s a win/win situation, so here’s the top 3 supplements I think work well.

Gymnema sylvestre

Gymnema sylvestre (aff) herb is an old traditional herb from India, the active ingredient is known as gymnemic acid. The active ingredient tricks your body into mimicing glucose molecules, blocking the cell receptors in the intestine so you won’t uptake and absorb sugar.

The benefits:

  • helps balance blood sugar levels
  • dulls the senses in your tastebuds for sugary things

Pregnant and lactating women, people with any type of milkweed allergies, people taking anti-diabetic medication or prescription antidepressants should consult your doctor first.

Chromium

Chromium (aff) helps to promote sugar and carbohydrate metabolism.

Benefits:

  • helps to regulate appetite
  • aids blood sugar and metabolism
  • great for helping to reduce cravings

Tip: Cinnamon is a natural form of chromium, you can use more cinnamon in your cooking or take a small dose stright on your tongue when you get a craving. Works every time.

Omega 3s

Increasing healthy fats in your diet helps on many different levels. They are best known for their anti inflammatory properties but when taken regularly they help to reduce sugar cravings. I often recommend taking flaxseed capsules and having 2 with every main meal. You can also drizzle a bit of olive oil over your meals or add some additional avocado on the side. These methods help overall to reduce cravings and help to regulate appetite too.

Forms of Omega 3s  include:

  • Organic fish oils (aff)
  • Flaxseed oil
  • Walnut oil

I find using a combo of gymnema sylvestre and Omega 3s works really well. Take those healthy fats before every meal or add the extra drizzle of oil here and there and then take the supplement as prescribed on the pack.

Give any of those supplements a try and I can assure you that your sugar cravings will stop driving you to distraction :)
