We sometimes hear about the connection between sugar and health problems but we’ve probably also heard that there’s no truth in it. So is sugar bad for your health or not?

My own research and experience suggests that YES sugar is probably our number one enemy when it comes to protecting our health. If we could manage it in very small portions then all would be okay, but we over consume it by the bucket loads and it does contribute to many health conditions.

100 years ago people only consumed 10 grams of sugar per year, now on average people are consuming their body weight in sugar per year. Now that’s a HUGE contrasting difference isn’t it. I remember watching Jamie Oliver give a speech on sugar and he pushed out a wheelbarrow full of sugar and tipped it onto the stage as a demonstration of how much sugar kids were eating. That was a pretty visual and quite a shocking realisation that there really is a major problem going on and it’s affecting the health of every nation worldwide.

Is Sugar Bad For Your Health? Here’s what the scientists have to say

•Lewis Cantly, cancer researcher, has been studying sugar as a main contributor to the rise in cancer. He says that this is because insulin causes so many adverse affects to cells in the body. Eating sugar equals increased insulin. High blood sugar and increased insulin also means no oxygen to cells, meaning that cells can change or die.

•Kimber Stanhope, nutritional biologist, showed that participants consuming sugar had increased blood levels of small dense LDL cholesterol (the bad stuff), and cardiovascular disease. This can happen in just 2 weeks of increased sugar intake. It’s not the fat that’s the main issue.

•Eric Stice, a neuro scientist, his research shows that sugar affects the brain in the same way as cocaine. This means it is also addictive and we’ve all experienced the powers sugar can have over us. It rules many of our behaviours, drives us to distraction, makes our cravings and mind do strange things. Now that should be enough to make us wonder, don’t you think?

•Dr Robert Lustig – pediatric endocrinologist – sugar researcher – says that 75% of obesity, diabetes, hypertension, heart disease caused by sugar intake. 150 calories of soda or sugar increases risk of type 2 diabetes by 7 times.

Is Sugar Bad For Your Health

There are hundreds of studies going on but the truth is that this information is going to take a while to become mainstream knowledge because sugar is deeply embedded within our system. I think one of the best things you can do for your health is quit the sugar!
