You’ve been eating well and exercising but you seem to keep gaining weight or you’re stuck on a weight loss plateau without results.
You seem to have multiple issues and no matter what you try it doesn’t resolve.
You’ve got mysterious aches and pains that won’t go away.
Your hormones just seem to play havoc on you and you can’t get them on track.
You’re always fatigued, can’t muster up any energy, have a cloudy mind, and can’t seem to concentrate as well.
You’ve got a bunch of strange irritating symptoms with no explained cause.
You’ve got itchy or inflamed skin or scalp, itchy ears, and just feel irritable.
Do any or all of these situations sound familiar?
So are your health problems yeast candida related?
They could be.
Candida albicans are a type of bacterial yeast found in our gut and throughout our body.
In our gut we have 4-6 lbs (2-3 kg) of micro-organisms, you can also call these bacteria or microbes, and there are around 500 different species. In a healthy gut we have around 80% good guys and 20% bad guys. Some bad guys are actually needed but like anything in our body, it’s all about the balance.
When the candida gets out of balance these little bugs can start causing havoc on many different levels. The candida albicans become like a fungus much like mold that grows and spreads.
The candida albican fungus actually develops roots known as mycelia that can penetrate the gut walls, enter the bloodstream, and can settle itself in other tissues in the body. So it really is like a mold that can spread, grow and colonize in different areas. Unbelievable that a bacteria can do that right?!
This causes what’s commonly known as a ‘leaky gut’, where something (in this case candida) compromises the tight junctions in the digestive tract and allows both food particles and toxins can enter the bloodstream and spread throughout the body.

Because candida has this characteristic, symptoms can show up as various different things in the body – skin, digestive tract, urinary tract, nervous system, mind, reproductive/hormone system, eyes, ears, nose, joints, muscles and more.
It’s interesting because more and more research is showing that an imbalance of gut microbes is contributing to the development of many conditions. And I’m beginning to think candida might be the culprit in more than a few cases. I’ve seen it in myself and in clients many times over the years, and often it goes unnoticed for quite a long time.
Candida Causes
Because the candida is a yeast like bacteria it can get activated by a variety of things – stress, diet changes, alcohol, or even just general low immune function. It will all happen from a gut level and everything affects our gut!
Mostly it is dietary related and often comes down to consumption of things like sugar, excess carbohydrates, and alcohol. So it makes sense that to treat it, you’ve gotta look at these things first.
The thing is, for people who are susceptible to candida overgrowth (like me), we do have to keep a check on it because it can rear it’s ugly head again and again. I’m not sure on the science behind this one, but maybe our bodies are just more inclined to ‘trigger’ the yeast activation in different circumstances.
Carbohydrate/ Sugar Intolerance
I got to pondering upon this recently.
One of the major foods that feed candida are carbohydrates and sugars. So for a person like me, or maybe you, consuming too many carbs and sugars is a bad idea. I’ve definitely always been better when I quit sugar and stay off it!
What it got me thinking about was the rate of people suffering with weight gain, getting diabetes, suffering aches and pains, and all these other mysterious symptoms, and I think it all might be related to our carbohydrate and sugar intolerance.
As humans, we’re really not designed to eat that many carbs. We were designed to eat LOTS of plant foods, vegetables yes. But not really that many grains or fruits. And definitely not all the sugar and refined carbs most of us are eating.
Sure candida can be prompted by other things besides our diet, but often this is the ’cause’ in many cases.
So Is YOUR issue candida?
There is a spit test you can do at home to see if you have candida. You can check that out over here.
The thing is, because candida is like a fungus that travels throughout the body, almost any symptom could be candida related. For a full list of symptoms, check out this post I wrote a long time back.
If you’ve been struggling with ‘health symptoms’ for sometime and they don’t seem to be getting any better. Or you’ve tried a variety of things without a result, then I’d definitely recommend you try a candida cleanse diet for a minimum of 6 weeks.
One great thing I’ve learned over the years is that following a candida diet helps almost anything!
It’s a strict whole foods based diet that really cleans out your system and it has amazing results every time. I’ve seen this in myself and in my clients time and time again. It is an anti-inflammatory diet, so helps with lots of inflammatory conditions too.
Expected results include:
- Weight loss
- Balanced hormones
- Reduced aches and pains
- Improved sleep
- Clear skin
- Improved digestion
- Increased metabolism
So what I’m trying to say here is that even if your symptoms aren’t candida related, the candida diet itself is an AMAZING cleanse that boosts your bodies function on every single level.
I’ll tell you it’s not easy in the first week so I’m just warning you okay.
What tends to happen is you get a candida diet off reaction. Generally what this means is you feel a bit worse before you feel better, so the first week is no fun and you really have to prepare yourself mentally for the changes and challenges that come.
But really, that’s just like any diet or lifestyle changes, they aren’t easy. But when we want to get results, we do what we have to. I find for me it’s always an ongoing tweak of many aspects of my life. Often we know what to do but that doesn’t mean we do. And finding balance isn’t always easy, wouldn’t you agree?
The good thing is, you can still eat lots of awesome food on the candida cleanse.
If you want to get started you can check out the basic candida food list over here.
Or if you want to delve in more, then you might consider grabbing a copy of my Candida Diet Handbook. It’s got an entire food and supplement program with meal plan and much more.
Or if you just want the food stuff, then my 5 week Candida Meal Plan and food guide is the way to go. Because the diet is pretty strict it can be difficult for people to come up with food ideas.
Having so much experience with it makes it pretty easy for me to still eat interesting tasty things, which is why I created the candida meal plan sometime back. So it definitely helps make things easier.
But like I said, if you want to get started yourself, you can simply follow the basic candida food list over here.
If you’ve got a variety of symptoms or a health problem that doesn’t seem related to anything else, then it might just be a candida yeast overgrowth. It certainly doesn’t hurt to give the diet cleanse a 6 week run and see what it does for you.
So will you give it a try?
Your health is your wealth,
Jedha Xx
P.S. Here are some pictures from the 5 Week Candida Diet Meal Plan. Even though the diet cleanse is fairly restrictive, as you can see, there are still lots of yummy things you can eat.

I actually enjoy the simplicity of food and love getting back to basics and that’s really what the candida diet is all about!

Hello Jedha, My Chiropractors office identified a yeast issue in my gut and suggested a upplement which I have been taking for several weeks. I try hard to eat a clean and healthy diet, but struggle intensely to eliminate sugar. I have cut down on sugar quite a bit. Do you think the supplements can rid me from the yeast in my gut even if I still indulge in some sugar on a daily basis? I’d love to hear your thoughts.
Julie Brown
No Julie, the candida feeds on sugar so you really have to get rid of it entirely for at least 6 weeks to kill off the candida.
Having the candida makes it extra difficult to quit the sugar because when you try you are shutting off their food source and it makes the cravings stronger. You can also get a candida die off reaction, which can make you feel worse for a week or so. These supplements help http://goodfoodeating.org/4153/candida-die-off-remedies/
Unfortunately candida is a tough one. But it is worth the effort to clear yourself of it.
