We all know that our fat cells tend to grow faster than we'd like, right? But did you know that your fat cells are:An endocrine organHost a whole array of active hormones, proteins and active cellsCan stimulate chronic inflammation in the bodyAnd can drive you to eat more food?I bet you didn't so let's get to know all about fat cells because it's not as simple as counting calories or points, it's far more involved than that and personally I find fat cells pretty fascinating! If you prefer to read, here is some info on fat cells.Fat cells are actually an endocrine organIn scientific terms fat cells are also know as adipocytes and collectively fat cells are called adipose tissue. Adipocytes that were once considered dormant are now recognised as an active endocrine organ, particularly white adipose tissue. Adipocytes help regulate many physiological and pathological processes and maintain biological homeostasis (balance), including immunity and inflammation.Fat cells can stimulate chronic inflammation in the body Adipocytes can increase in number of fat cells (hyperplasia), and increase in size (hypertrophy). During the process of hyperplasia and hypertrophy immunity is altered and adipose tissue produces and secretes various cytokines and adipokines. These are chemical messengers, hormones and proteins that communicate with other organs in the body. Adipokines facilitate various responses throughout the body but unfortunaltely most cytokines and adipokines are proinflammatory and contribute to low-grade systemic inflammation. Our metabolic and immune systems are intricately connected and these alterations that occur in our metabolism are the major contribution to development of modern metabolic and non-comminicable such as type 2 diabetes, heart disease, hypertension and so forth. Why do fat cells cause inflammation? The mechanisms aren't entirely clear but so far the theories that scientists have include:• Overload of nutrients inducing stress inside cells • Excessive nutrients causing accumulated proteins in cells • Adipocytyes get overloaded with fat allowing immunce cells to infiltrate • As adipocytes enlarge it causes a lack of oxygen reaching body tissues • Adipocytes may directly activate immunity and ignite inflammationFat cells can drive you to eat more foodIf you're wondering why you have difficulty staying away from food I can guarantee it's not just your willpower. We have some powerful hormones in our fat cells that drive our appetite and behaviour! In the last episode of the Good Food Eating Podcast we talked about a client of mine Lisa and her case study around adrenal fatigue. In todays episode I go over adrenal fatigue treatment and what we did to help her get her life back on track and there's lots of tips and tricks you can apply as well. When she first came to see me she had a whole range of symptoms including: chronic fatigue insomina depression digestive problems memory and cognition issues sensitivity to cold food cravings and yet a lack of appetite and a few other things too We used 3 key treatment strategies. 1. Diet 2. Lifestyle changes 3. Simple supplementation I gave Lisa a plan to follow but it was still up to her to follow it. Thankfully she did, wanting to get better and within a few months she went from a ghost like person who was dragging herself around to a person with colour in her skin, light back in her eyes, and energy. Perhaps not energy to burn...yet. But boy what a difference. I really wish I had of taken pictures because it really was an astounding change. I hope you enjoy the episode and find it useful. It's one of my favourite topics to talk about. Download the podcast here You can find heaps more information in my book & program for adrenal fatigue. The Adrenal Fatigue Handbook. And I also work privately with clients from all over the world on things like adrenal fatigue and other health conditions. Find out more info about my services here. Lab Testing That You Can Do At Home I also talked about lab testing on this podcast so here's some info about it and a place you can order a home test. One of the most accurate ways to test cortisol levels is with a saliva test that is taken over different time periods throughout the day. Cortisol is what we want to be measuring because generally the effects of adrenal fatigue and dysfunction occur due to cortisol levels that are all out of whack. Following on from this, the rest of our hormones go awry in a chain of follow up events. When you measure your salivary hormones it shows the tissue concentration of the hormones in your body. The great thing about measuring saliva in this way is that it shows the active component of the hormone in your body, whereas a blood test would show total hormone levels but not necessarily the active component. Canary Club has a home test you can purchase for $119 that gives you full instructions on when to take your saliva over a 24 hour period. You can check out all the details of the test over here. See you for next weeks podcast.
